During my times working at Starbucks in 2017, I became acutely aware of the challenges faced by job seekers who are 50 years old and above. Starbucks had a committee dedicated to promoting the hiring of individuals in this age group. While this committee initially caught my attention, I never anticipated that it would serve as a catalyst for a profound realization about my own future.
The experience opened my eyes to a potential future that was somewhat intimidating, a future that could potentially mark the conclusion of my professional journey. Today, as I have just turned 50, I reflect on my learnings and I want to share my thoughts. It's not about harboring fear, but rather about conveying a message and embracing a radical change.
I invite you into my perspective, and I hope it resonates with you. If not, consider holding onto it for the future. Perhaps one day it might help.

Just remember, there's no judgment and a lot of understanding on today's episode of the Life Affairs Podcast.
Turning 50 I am shredding my CV and re crafting the unthinkable future.
This month, I hit the big 5 0 milestone, you know.
Half a century in the flow.
But hold on, don't you crow.
Some say it's tough, a job hunting hurdle.
For fifties deemed ancient, a professional curdle.
The hiring managers,
they claim the throne.
But irony strikes for many are 50 prone.
Recruiters in their 20s or 30s at best, to them were just shadows put to the test.
But wait, let's pause. Let's take a glance at the mirror of life.
Give it a chance. For this age, it's just a number, a label.
Not a ticket to the career disabled.
This month, I turn 50, it's true.
But guess what, my friend, here's my view.
I don't look 50 in the mirror's reflection.
I don't feel 50, no aging infection.
I don't smell or taste 50, no.
I'm a vintage wine with a youthful glow.
So let the world chatter, let them debate.
I'll embrace 50 with a smile, not a weight.
Now, rewriting my CV with a seasoned touch.
At 50, a skill acquired its means so much.
Not given a care, a remarkable feat.
A master of life in the driver's seat.
Experience etched in every line.
A narrative of resilience so fine.
Skills. Polished, wisdom refined, in the career game, a seasoned mind.
Age is just a number that's decreed, as I might navigate the job world with speed.
For at 50, I've learned to defy the noise around, let the doubters cry.
So here's my CV, bold and free.
It testament to age and also to me.
I'm rewriting it all with a confident stride.
At 50 where indifference becomes a guide.
I have named myself differently on this CV.
It's Rebellina, wisebeyondheryears.
I'm passionate about navigating the era of equality. Armed with a sharp sense of humor, and an inherited unfailing red lipstick, committed to breaking barriers, seamlessly balancing the dance of career and motherhood, and dispelling the myth that age defines capability.
My professional experience. Strategic Navigator of Inclusivity and Positivity. I create vibrant atmospheres, turn challenges into triumphs, infectiously challenging and dismantling outdated gender norms and stereotypes. Exemplary advocate for mature excellence. I achieve a fabulous presence in a world that sometimes overlooks the enduring beauty of mature women.
Master juggler of responsibilities. I engage with finesse in balancing career, family and societal expectations, occasionally dropping societal norms with a wink. Chaos conductor extraordinaire. I manage the chaos of raising two young adults, an eight year old and the remnants of post war world. Retains a bold sense of humor and unwavering hope.
Survivor and thriver. I oversee life's challenges, teach myself to emerge and grow my resilience and wisdom. I exhibit self control, remaining calm during both personal and professional storms. Feminist trailblazer. I lead campaigns for equality with heart and mind, dedicated to reshaping the narrative of patriarchy.
My skills. Equality advocate. Adept at conquering metaphorical obstacles like sexism and ageism, championing equality while defying patriarchy. Committed to supporting egalitarianism, ensuring a balance without favoring one gender over the other. Teleportation extraordinaire. I possess the magical ability to seamlessly navigate the demanding realms of juggling kids activities, school commitments, and the perpetual drive to support their endeavors, all while expertly arriving wherever glass ceilings need shattering.
Wisdom Wizard I leverage life's lessons. Recognize that wisdom knows no age boundaries. I have a dedication to dismantling outdated structures, fostering inclusivity and cultivating forward thinking environments. Maternal Mastery Specialist I showcase unparalleled skill in adeptly managing the delicate balance of teenage eye rolls and toddler's tantrums.
Creating a harmonious environment extends seamlessly to the professional realm. Navigating the nuanced dynamics of tantrums from millennials and eye rolls from Gen X counterparts. Battlefield Resilience I muster the art of chaos, excelling in both professional challenges and navigating NerveGone Combat Zone, post North War and a living room resembling a battlefield, strewn with Pokémon cards like shards of glass.
Equally adept at bringing order to the aftermath of a spontaneously thrown teenage party, turning the living room into a dynamic Twilight Zone.
My educations. Life University graduate. I earned a PhD specializing in thriving amidst chaos and navigating motherhood. Master of Wit awardee. Recognized for exceptional humor and adeptly turning comments into punchline. Therapeutic proficiency. Completed specialized training in the room of family therapy, systemic therapy, and couple therapy.
I graduated as fostering healthy relationships, guiding individuals and families towards positive communication and understanding, intense and ongoing practice in the effective concept in relationships named forge the iron when it's cold.
Creating this CV is for me showcasing that life at 50 is just the beginning of a new and adventurous chapter. With wiser people, more life experience, maybe more patience also, and always wanting to grow and get better. I'm lucky to have young adults in the house, and my eight year old. Because they keep me up to date, they keep me sharp, and they help me to step up my game so that I don't fall back on old habits and old ways of thinking.
Though, I have to mention, I'm much more liberal than the generation of today. And this is worth knowing about 50 plus people.
